Rejuvenate, refocus, and revitalize. Words have power, and these mighty verbs are what nurses embody as they come together for the 2023 ONS Congress® to network, learn, and leave refreshed, renewed, and restored to reenergize their practice.

What Does It Mean?

The 2023 ONS Congress theme centers around three words:

  • Rejuvenate: [re·ju·ve·nate] verb. Give new energy or vigor to

  • Refocus: [re·fo·cus] verb. Focus (attention or resources) on something new or different

  • Revitalize: [re·vi·tal·ize] verb. Give new life or vigor to

The theme reinforces and emphasizes how ONS Congress supports both your clinical nursing practice and your overall well-being. Taking care of yourself helps you take care of others. ONS Congress is your time to refresh your mind, assimilate your knowledge to advance your practice, and renew your passion for oncology.

Current burnout and mental health statistics for nurses are staggering. In a 2021 study published in the Journal of Advanced Nursing, researchers reported that the overall level of emotional exhaustion among nurses was 34.1%. Some of the risk factors for increased nursing burnout included younger age, lower levels of social support, and employment in a high-risk environment. Researchers also cited the threat of COVID-19 and lack of readiness to cope with the pandemic as reasons for increased nurse burnout

In a 2021 American Nurses Foundation mental health and wellness survey of 9,572 nurses, 34% reported their emotional health as “not, or not at all, emotionally healthy.” Common responses included feeling stressed, frustrated, and overwhelmed, and 42% of nurses surveyed reported having “an extremely stressful, disturbing, or traumatic experience” because of COVID-19.
